The evolution of a design, an artwork or creative idea can be quite remarkable and particularly noticeable when working on urgent jobs for brand new clients. You don't have much time to get to know the brand or the client so what you start with takes a small and sometimes hectic journey, until it arrives to it's completion. Ideas that felt strong at the beginning, take different shapes or dissapear completely in lieu of better developed ideas.
It's worth explaining to clients that the 'first art' is most likely going to end up as simply a tool to expose the true expectations they have and lead to them ultimatelygetting what they really want and need. Which is, after all, the only objective!
Here are two examples of how what you start with can end up looking quite different by the end in a short time! Both of these jobs developed in just a few days or less. If something isn't working, or your client isn't completely happy with it or isn't sure what they like, it's up to you to think quick and give them what they may or may not know they need.

American students Jenny Burrows and Matt Kappler came up with a series of ads for a famous museum that would appeal to a younger generation... The museum didn't like them unfortunately, which is too bad really since these could've have been a winner!

Kanye West recently directed his own 30 minute film using his music and art directed by Italian contemporary artist Vanessa Beecroft... Nice to see he worked with an actual artist, rather than attempt to replicate her style... Lady Gaga take note. It's a weird little film, sometimes awkward and incoherent for the most part but the art direction is quite beautiful...

A little insight into one of the best blogs around... it's a little bit art and a little bit fashion... http://thesartorialist.blogspot.com/

This 'documentary' is brilliant and nothing short of that. Is it part of a hoax? Is it a true doco? It's hard to tell when you're dealing with director/artist Banksy. So clever is this artist, you don't actually know what to think of the last 3rd of the film... Is Mr Brainwash real? It seems too ridiculous to fathom, yet so ingenius a hoax that if it weren't Banksy behind it, you'd dismiss the possibility of it being just that and you have to resign yourself to never really knowing, since Banksy and his crew keep secrets better than the CIA.
The name of the film is a critique on the commercialisation of art and follows the devolopment of it's main character, Thierry Guetta who starts out as an enthusiast who likes to document street artists on film to becoming himself the artist 'Mr Brainwash'. So many things in the film point to Mr Brainwash being a superiorly executed prank, however whether it is or isn't a prank, the movie makes a point by raising a whole bunch of questions and makes you question your own integrityin understanding art and then the integrity of the art world.
Above all this film is so interesting clever and entertaining and the footage of the world's most incredible graffiti artists creating their iconic works is more than fascinating. As an artist or graphic designer, it leaves you wishing you'd done something that cool... it's cool to the point that cool soun
ds too lame a term to describe it. Downloading it as a rental from itunes was also novel. A hundred stars!

First and foremost for the year, let's spare a thought for the people of Queensland, affected by the floods. Apart from all of the major rescue efforts to save lives there are the little unknown heroes saving the animals and protecting invaluable items such as artwork and other irreplaceable cultural items. You are all brave and heroic in your own right. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the affected.
We hope you had a safe and joyous holiday season and we will be back soon with more creative tidbits. Until then, stay safe.

British street artist, Banksy's take on Christmas and one we couldn't resist... his take on girls... two of many clever stencils from this artist. www.Banksy.co.uk

We've had YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts for quite some while, but we're finally starting to make some organised use of these powerful networking tools. We've customised the design and now they are all branded with the Cocozou colours and artwork.
